On Sunday, August 13, 2017, the Hon’ble Chief Minister of Maharashtra, Mr. Devendra Fadnavis unveiled the foundation stone of Indo UK Institute of Health (IUIH) Medicity that’s coming up in 151 acres at MIHAN-SEZ, Nagpur. With this, Hon’ble Prime Minister of India, Shri Narendra Modi’s visionary project of providing affordable healthcare to 400 million Indians reaches another major milestone.

On November 12, 2015, the Hon’ble Prime Ministers of India and the United Kingdom (UK) had announced in a joint statement, a historic Health Collaboration Agreement for setting up 11 Indo UK Institutes of Health (IUIH) in 11 Indian states to bring healthcare to India which is Available, Affordable and Accountable to all. When fully implemented, it would amount to investment in the region of Rs 17,600 crore into India’s healthcare system, making it the largest healthcare project.

The Indo UK Institute of Health (IUIH) programme, led by Dr. Ajay Rajan Gupta, Group MD and CEO, aims to deliver this vision by developing IUIH Medicities and IUIH Clinics across India. Each Medicity is planned to include a 1000 bed hospital along with strategic clinical and training partnerships with the UK’s finest NHS organisations, universities and private sector companies.

The project is supported by Ministry of Health & Family Welfare, Government of India and Invest India which is the national investment promotion and facilitation agency for India promoted by Department of Industrial Policy and Promotion (DIPP), Ministry of Commerce and Industry, Government of India. Healthcare UK and the India office of the UK’s Department for International Trade (DIT) are also supporting IUIH with its plans.

Speaking at the occasion, Mr. Fadnavis said, “IUIH Medicity is poised to change the face of MIHAN and turn Nagpur into a global medical tourism hub. Medical procedures that cost Rs 50 lakhs in the US and the UK can be conducted for Rs 5 lakhs here and that’s the scope and capability we need to leverage on.” He also appreciated the fact that the IUIH Medicity will generate direct and indirect employment for around 200,000 people in the region.

Addressing the gathering at the ceremony, Ms. Jane Grady, Deputy Director, Trade, Economics & Prosperity, British High Commission, India said, “NHS is the best integrated healthcare system in the world. Through IUIH, we are excited to bring to India, the UK’s expertise in training, innovation and delivery. This ambitious project will see NHS standards of care supporting the healthcare needs of people of Maharashtra. It will also show people the willingness of the UK’s health sector, the NHS as well as the private sector which is world class too, to work with India.”

In his welcome address, Dr. Ajay Rajan Gupta, MD and Group Chief Executive Officer, Indo UK Institute of Health informed, “IUIH Medicity Nagpur will be the logistical hub, the centre of supply chain management for all the 11 IUIH medicities. We are also coming up with a data analytics centre here in association with IBM and other parties that will process clinical information for all medicities. We will also conduct clinical research, genetic research and stem cell research at the Nagpur facility.”

Later in the day, while addressing a press conference, he said that it will take 13 years for all the three phases to be completed however phase 1 which consists of a 250-bed hospital will be ready by 2019. The construction will begin in December this year. He applauded the response from the state government in terms of statutory clearances. On being asked about the business viability, he added that PricewaterhouseCoopers has conducted the feasibility study and this project is not just for local population but targeted at medical tourists from across the world too.

“The Prime Minister’s Office is tracking this closely as a Joint Task Force headed by Mr. CK Mishra, Secretary, Ministry of Health & Family Welfare, has been formed which meets every six months to evaluate the progress made,” he concluded.

According to Mr. Suresh Kakani, Vice Chairman & Managing Director, Maharashtra Airport Development Company (MADC), who also addressed the press conference, “We have promised IUIH that their designs shall be approved within 15 days of submission, something that generally takes 6 months, or else they can start the work. They have been given office space on rent in our complex so that no time is lost in coordination.”

Other important guests present at the foundation stone ceremony were Mr. Ajay Sancheti, Member of Parliament; Mr. Krupal Thumane, Member of Parliament; Mr. Anoop Kumar, Divisional Commissioner; Mr. Nanda Jichkar, Mayor, Nagpur Municipal Corporation; Mr. Prakash Gajbhiye, Member of Legislative Council; Mr. Sudhakar Deshmukh, Member of Legislative Assembly; Dr. Ashish Deshmukh, Member of Legislative Assembly; and Mr. Mark Hitchman, MD, Toshiba Medical Systems, UK.

The IUIH Medicity Nagpur is divided into seven distinct zones:

  1. Healthcare Delivery Zone shall house Trauma Centre, Tertiary Hospital, Day Surgery Centre, De-addiction Centre, NHS e-Health, Integrated Medicine Centre and a Medical Mall.
  2. Education and Training Zone shall have a Medical College, Post Graduate College, Nursing College, Allied Health Professionals Training Centre, Simulation Centre and a Conference Centre.
  3. Clinical Support Services Zone shall have centres for Diagnostic Imaging, Pharmacy, Sterilization and Decontamination, Pathology Laboratory, Catering, Medical Supplies, Pharmaceutical Supplies, Blood Bank and Storage & Distribution.
  4. Manufacturing & Technology Zone shall have specific areas for Medical Technology, Pharmaceutical, Health Technology, Health-related IT, Medical Devices and Implants.
  5. Research & Development Zone shall have an Incubator Hub besides centres for Physics & Biomedical, IT Big Data and Medical Supplies Development.
  6. Commercial Zone shall have a Hospital Hotel, Wellness Centre, Retail Area, Accommodation Area, Laundry Area and Nursery Area.
  7. Administrative Zone shall house offices of Medicity Administration, Recruitment Services, Property Services, Estate Management, Transport, High-class, Accommodation and a Helipad.
